Build Albion: Food Hub and Farmers Market

Albion College, the City of Albion, and community organizations began the Build Albion AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative in 2016 as a part of a larger community effort to revitalize the City of Albion. Through capacity building, focused on alleviating poverty and creating partnerships with stakeholders, these efforts could serve as a model to other post-industrial towns. Year 1 and Year 2 members laid a foundation for Year 3 through community needs assessments, placements, and special collaborative projects. Year 3 will begin the transition to creating sustainability in the subsites served. The Build Albion AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative team is composed of 10 VISTA members and a VISTA leader. As part of this Initiative, each Member will go through orientation and training with the rest of the VISTA team. Through the college, the VISTA member will have access to affordable housing, the College's fitness facilities, and reduced priced meals at the College's dining hall. After orientation and training, this VISTA will serve with the Albion Food Hub, Opened in 2016 as a Commercial Kitchen Incubator (CKI) and Farmer's Market. You will work to build capacity for the Farmer's Market and expand into wholesaling. The CKI is designed to increase economic capacity in Albion by offering a low-cost, predictable starting space for food entrepreneurs. The Farmer's Market, a 100 year operation in Albion, is looking to grow, through human capital investment and creating a CSA-style program that will address community transportation needs. The wholesaling business, which is being developed in partnership with another regional food hub, will give local farms the ability to market their products to commercial and institutional buyers. You will be involved in market research to catalog area farms and institutions, product availability and product demand, and then matching those farms to prospective buyers in the area. Join us in transforming Albion's food system!
