Build Albion: Land Bank Authority

Albion College, the City of Albion, and community organizations began the Build Albion AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative in 2016 as a part of a larger community effort to revitalize the City of Albion. Through capacity building, focused on alleviating poverty and creating partnerships with stakeholders, these efforts could serve as a model to other post-industrial towns. Year-one and two members laid a foundation for year-two through community needs assessments, placements, and special collaborative projects. Year 3 will begin to transition to creating sustainability in the Program. The Build Albion AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative team is composed of 10 VISTA members and a VISTA leader. As part of this Initiative, each Member will go through orientation and training with the rest of the VISTA team. Through the college, the VISTA member will have access to affordable housing, the College's fitness facilities, and reduced priced meals at the College's dining hall. After orientation and training, this VISTA will serve with the Calhoun County Land Bank Authority (CCLBA), a quasi-governmental organization that serves all of Calhoun County, including Albion. The CCLBA works to support local neighborhood and business district revitalization by managing an inventory of distressed properties throughout the County. In Albion, the CCLBA works to remove blighted structures, rehabilitate homes, encourage the transformation of vacant land, and to engage residents in the process. You will assist the CCLBA with grants administration, GIS mapping and assessment of properties, marketing of properties to residents and potential businesses, and you will seek input from neighborhood residents as to new uses. In addition, you will partner with other VISTAs to recruit volunteers to implement programs of mutual benefit to the community.
